Tallboy from the LCBO, one of six new beers in their Après-Adventure mixed pack. Dated Oct 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy amber-orange, kicking up nearly two fingers of foamy, off white-coloured head that fades within several minutes' time. A beautiful curtain of lace is draped against the glass, with a thin collar and soapy, sudsy cap gracing the surface. It smells of pine needles and sap, with rye bread and caramel also figuring in strongly; rather spicy/peppery, with hints of grapefruit and orange peel. Smells like my kind of rye beer.
A very tasty beer; plenty of rye paired with old school West Coast IPA hop flavours. I'm getting caramel, rye bread, toasted grains and grapefruit, with hints of orange peel oiliness by mid-sip. The back end is spicy and resiny, with pine sap and earthy hop bitterness giving way to a citrusy, spicy, mildly boozy-sweet aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with relatively low carbonation that gently brushes against the tongue; feels smooth, soft and slick, with excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 4.04, an A-. I may be biased, because I love rye beers and it has been a long-ass time since I've last reviewed a good rye-centric IPA, but I enjoyed the hell out of Après-Ice Fish. I would not go so far as to call this a complex beer, as its hop profile is pretty ordinary, but the rye flavours really pop - it's just what I was craving on this cool early winter's night. I would love to see this available as a single, but I won't hold my breath - rye beers don't seem to be in high demand, given the dearth of local options in this category.
