473 mL can from the LCBO, one of six new beers in their Après-Adventure mixed pack. Dated Sep 26 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky brownish-amber colour; shining a bright light upon the glass reveals its brilliant orange hue, in addition to countless fine grains of sediment. Two fingers of fluffy, foamy, buff-coloured head lasts for the better part of five minutes, eventually reduced to a tight collar and frothy cap; a few flecks of lace are flung about in its wake. The aroma has an uncanny resemblance to that of raisin bran, or perhaps a bran muffin? I'm also getting suggestions of caramel and molasses, with hints of toasted brown bread and confiture.
The flavour profile is bready, with hints of raisin fruitiness at the forefront. Rye bread, brown bread, toasted grains, caramel and treacle, concluding with spicy fruitcake and herbal, earthy, slightly roasty notes at the finish. Sweet aftertaste, with dissipating hints of burnt sugar and brown bread; the alcohol becomes much more noticeable as the glass warms. Medium in body, with gentle carbonation that weakly brushes against the palate; feels smooth and a little syrupy, clinging to the tongue. Average drinkability; one can was more than enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. Whitewater's Après-Ski is an acceptable bock. The bran muffin aroma was honestly unexpected, unique and pretty cool all around, but with doppelbocks I have come to expect a somewhat more varied array of malt aromas and flavours than this beer was able to offer. It's two-dimensional, with bready muffin/molasses being the dominant theme - good as a random sampler pack filler, but not great, and definitely not comparable to the German gold standards of this style.
