473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 16 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, translucent pale yellow colour, producing two fingers of dense, creamy white head that slowly retreats. A little over five minutes later, a creamy eighth-inch cap and collar remain in place, with an attractive curtain of lace draped onto the glass - looks great so far. The aroma is fruity and a little sour, offering up notes of guava, underripe plum, lemon and peach, with suggestions of wheat, lactic acidity and some very mild funkiness.
A kettle sour with some pep: sour at the forefront, with lactic acid, lemon, guava and underripe stone fruit coming through. Hints of funk and moderate malt vinegar sourness develop on the back end, with floral hops, pineapple and stone fruit preceding a tart, acidic aftertaste that persists for a moment or two. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that feels crisp and prickly on the tongue; surprisingly refreshing and very quaffable.
Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. Whitewater's Down Stream is tasty, but it's not the kind of beer I'd want to drink every day. That being said, it is quite difficult to brew a really good dry-hopped sour, so I can respect the effort that was evidently put into this one - the hops provide plenty of lively, fruity characteristics, while the 'sour' itself is actually more aggressively tart than I have come to expect from an average Ontario kettle sour. Worth a try - given this can's age (it's nearly 7 months old), I'll keep an eye out for fresh stock and update this review as needed.
