473 mL can from the LCBO, one of several new fruity light beers included in Whitewater's Adventure Collection mixed pack. Dated May 11 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a slightly foggy pale yellow colour, with one finger of tight, foamy white head that sizzles away within ninety seconds or so. A modest collar and filmy-thin cap remain, with a few swaths of lace deposited later on, as the level drops with a few sips. Citrusy aroma of red grapefruit pulp and juiciness, with faint suggestions of grainy cereals.
Pretty basic flavours - I'm getting grapefruit juice early on, with more of a citrus peel bitterness developing at the finish. Graininess and corn chip sweetness from the base lager are also discernible; mildly citrusy conclusion that lasts a second or so after each sip. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that feels spritzy and crisp; the mouthfeel is smooth and a little slick, but the carbonation keeps that aspect in check. Refreshing and very sessionable.
Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. Bait & Tackle might be my favourite beer in this Whitewater mixed pack, but Sunsetter (lemon/lime) was also pretty good - I think I'd buy either one of them again. Granted, my affinity for grapefruit is a big influence, but I think maybe citrus just pairs better with light beer than other fruits tend to. Their plain light lager, Last Light - also included in this pack, and presumably the base beer for these fruited variants - is also quite decent, as was the pineapple one. It's not the most exciting mixed pack you'll ever purchase, but it does have a couple of quality summer lagers.
