It's prime time. There's nothing sweeter than the sound of bells after hours of jigging minnows and hole-hopping on the ice. Reward your patience, warm your toes, and toast to your catch with this smooth vanilla porter. 32 IBU

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their Adventure Collection boxset at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. No date stamp or lot number. My 6th beer from the Cobden, Ontario brewery, and 5th for 2025. Requisitely respected by Gracie the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Whitewater's winter mixed pack. The packaging date is smudged, but all of the other beers in this pack were dated late Sept/early Oct 2023, so it's safe to assume the same of this one. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear copper-chestnut hue with ruby red highlights; it's capped with an inch of foamy, khaki-coloured head that lasts for several minutes. A modest collar of froth is left encircling a sudsy, filmy cap, with some lace deposition as the level drops after a few sips. Real vanilla and milk chocolate on the nose, with lesser notes of roasted malts, grain mash, cocoa and cafè latte.

A serviceable, relatively balanced light porter that gets a little sweeter on the back end. Cocoa, milk chocolate and dark chocolate come through early on, with subtle hints of espresso and roasted malts not far behind. The vanilla bean makes itself known towards the finish, joined by hints of chocolate and caramelized sugars; mildly sweet, malty aftertaste with dissipating vanilla. Light in body, with low-ish carbonation that meekly brushes against the tongue; feels smooth and fairly thin, but very quaffable.

Final Grade: 3.72, a B grade. It's normal for me to be unimpressed with vanilla stouts & porters, but I found Whitewater's Fish On to be more agreeable than most. The presumptive key to this achievement is the judicious use of real vanilla beans: it tastes authentic, not like an extract. Perhaps even more importantly, they didn't *overuse* the vanilla - it's not the focus, it's just a nice accent to go along with the chocolatey flavours of this otherwise ordinary porter. Not quite as good as the chocolate porter in their 2022 mixed pack (Après-Toboggan), but still a decent brew that I'd drink again.
