16oz pint at Underground YEG.
This beer appears a clear, dark bronzed amber hue, with one skinny finger of soapy and filmy beige head, which leaves little beyond a few remote islet specks of lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of bready, somewhat yeasty caramel malt, muddled fruit - sort of blueberry-like, but I guess that's the Saskatoons in the mix - a mild flintiness, and tame earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more fruity up front, the guest star bearing well, before a semi-sweet doughy caramel malt comes a' knockin', alongside some restrained leafy, weedy hops.
The bubbles are pretty laid-back, hardly a tic or twitch here or there, the body an adequate medium weight, in a fruit-bolstered sort of manner, and equally smooth. It finishes well off-dry, the muted, but clear and present fruitiness holding court with some lingering breadiness.
A drinkable enough fruit ale, though it would be nice if the Saskatoon berries were more evident in their tart personality potential. A worthy dark ale offering for this nascent brewing operation, looking forward to more from this outfit.
