Funk Brewing Co. "Casual"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 03/10/21 12:29"
$2 @ ACME #3711, Bala Cynwyd, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: A rough pour has brought up an average sized head of bright white over a hazy yellow-gold body. Unfortunately the head has already dropped. I should note at this point that my glass is definitely "beer clean" because the last beer I drank from it had a massive head and left great lacing behind. The only thing that happened between then and now was a rinse with clean water and an air-dry. The aroma delivers a lightly sweet, grainy malt with just a touch of herbal hops and some lager yeast sulphur in the background. It's not a bright aroma, but that's exactly what I was expecting of an American lager at 4.5% ABV. It's clean, and that's half the battle, so let's move on to the taste. It's pretty much exactly as the aroma suggests it will be. The malt is a little sweeter than I thought it might be, which is fine, and grainy, which is also fine although I'm sure they've used some adjunct here, and there's just a touch of herbal and spicy hop flavor to it. A restrained bitterness is just enough to balance it, and it finishes with some residual malt and a touch of spicy hops fading gently away. The mouthfeel is medium, which is a bit different for an American lager at 4.5%, but that still works, and one of the things that I really like about it, which is un-American, is its fine-bubbled, slightly less than standard "crisp" carbonation. Looking at the bubbles rising, there are some bigger bubbles, but most of them are very fine. In that sense it's very German to me. Germans love that natural carbonation. So, what to say about this overall? I think they've done a great job with it. It may be an American lager but it reminds me very much of many of the lagers that I've sampled in Bavaria. It's got flavor but it's not going to build up on you even after several liters, and the finish is great. I do think a few more IBUs would be great, but then it wouldn't be an American lager would it? It is teetering on the edge of balance though, and yet it is kept in check. Along with its soft mouthfeel and less of a 'burpy' carbonation it's remarkably drinkable, and if that was the trade-off for the lack of head retention I'd take it. Unfortunately, I don't believe that's the case and so it gets dinged a little bit on the score there, and it is hazy as opposed to clear, but otherwise it's really quite nice.
