Appearance: Poured with two fingers of head that produced ample lace and retained admirably. The body is a almost black, dark red of which you can see ample, almost soda levels of carbonation when put up to the light, which has me a bit worried.
Smell: Toasted charred caramel malt, pistachio nuts and an almost molasses note with them. The smell is ample and didn't need warming to come out. In fact warming doesn't really effect the profile very much.
Taste: As expected that peculair part nut, part fruit, part grass taste of pistachio nuts permeates the entire beer. Initially though it takes a back seat to the caramel malt, then the nuts arrive front and centre before a bitter snap of charred malt and earthy hops finish us off.
Mouthfeel: It leaves you belching pistachio which is fun, but what's left fun is that the charred hops seem to be what stick around and seem to constantly build on this one. The carbonation however is very even kilter and the transitioning is decent enough.
Drinkability: My earlier concern about this one being a bit gassy came to fruition, but I'm willing to let is slide a bit. It's on the heavier end of medium bodied that is for sure which once again, as a darker beer I'll give some slack. Refreshing enough with good and expected singular character.
Final Thoughts: The execution on this one was very well done, and I like that the nuts didn't get lost in the beer, as happens so offend in darker beers. I think the fact it's a lager and not a porter or stout contributed to that. That said, while this is an excellent winter drinker, I don't recommend pairing it with food. It's just too heavy. A great by the fire at the pub brew with the lads during Chirstmas is when I'd recommend this one. Worth a try if you're in the area around the holidays.
