To be clear I had the Amber Ale which was 3.8% abv and has been fixture there for years, so I assume we are talking about the same beer. I'd put it inthe American Amber/Red section if I had to move it anywhere.
Anyway, wherever it goes it's a good beer. not much to look at: an amber colour, small bublles on the side (rather than bottom) of my glass, and a white head leaving soem lacing.
The nose is citric with lots of orange and a hint of grapefruit. It smells like it will be hoppy and certainly doesn't disappoint on that score. It starts out fairly herbal, becomes sweeter and more citric with a hint of apricot (a trait I've noticed in a few American ambers), and then returns to the herbal flavour in the finish. It seems a little watery as it first hits the tongue until the hops kick in. After a while it seems slightly oily on the tongue.

Sampled at the Clockwork Beer Company.
Pours a golden yellow with a bubbly white head that leaves a little bit of lacing on the glass. A lot of citrusy hops in the nose and some malt in the background but the hops dominate. Strong citrusy hops with a little malt but like the nose, the taste is mostly citrusy hops. It still remains balanced, though. Smooth and moderately heavy mouthfeel. Drinkable, but rather more like a U.S. IPA than the usual British IPA in its hop character. A nice change from the usual malty Scottish offerings.
