Pours a dark Burgundy tinged brown color. Thin tan head dissipates steadily leaving no residual head or lacing. Pretty unremarkable.

Smell has notes of smoked malts, caramel, salty bacon, and some maltose the backend.

Taste follows the nose - lots of smoked malts up front with a bacon like flavor. Quite salty. No sweetness but there is a slight caramel flavor.

Feel is on the thinner/lighter side. Mild carbonation.

Overall an alright beer - not a great scotch ale.

I tried this beer at Madison Tavern in Chicago. The beer poured a hazy deep amber with thin white head that did not leave any lace. The scent was some peat and roast. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. There is a nice sweetness. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a decent beer.

Unknown vintage; drank 3/30/16 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque brown/purple appearance.

A rough pour yielded a big tan head; frothy lace.

Pickle, caramel, black pepper & sea salt notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Caramel, pickle & salt flavors up front; faint booze heat notes on the finish. Much less satisfying than my last session...still drinkable.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark, close to black garnet, opaque, with a one finger head and a good amount of lacing. Smell is malt, caramel, smoke, burnt wood (?). The taste is malt, caramel, toffee, a little smoke. Not getting the salt, there's kind of an off flavor. Fairly smooth, average body.

Might be an old bottle, but there was nothing here to make me consider buying another.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date. A new one to me from Middle Brow, this one "a salted scotch ale". Acquired a single bottle from the local bottle shop.

Poured into a Big Eddy snifter glass.

A - Dark mahogany pour, one finger of thin fizzy khaki head that falls to a ring and leaves a surface skimming. Minor thin spotty lacing that doesn't really cling. Appears adequately carbonated. Looks characteristic of the style.

S - An interesting and malty aroma - musty notes of wood, caramel, toffee, brown bread, and some dark red fruits. Light note of alcohol.

T - The salt comes through briefly on the taste, but is mostly dominated by notes of must, damp wood, oak, caramel, toffee, & light smoke. Light bit of briney / mineral flavor comes through from the salt on the finish. Caramel with notes of salt.

M - Feel is medium-full, semi-thickish, but smooth & creamy. Ideal carb per the style.

Overall, an interesting, yet fairly average example of the style from Middle Brow. Unique.

Middle Brow Beer Co. Ad Astra -----4/5.

12 oz bottle pour into a pint glass.
Very dark brown body floats a tan head that stays, but thin with some little, but thick, lacing.
Aroma includes smoke, malt, and alcohol.
Flavor matches the aroma with a flowery aftertaste.
The mouthfeel leans thick and creamy, per the style.
I can't wait for bonfire season.

Tasted in a 12 oz snifter from draught at Firkin on February 26, 2016. Look is deep dark red with a thick light tan head and lingering lacing. Smell is faint. Taste is smokey.
