On draught at the brewery. 12 oz. pour served in a fluted glass. It pours a mostly clear, iced tea color with a modest, ecru-colored head and long-lasting lacing. The smell is primarily caramel malt and spice with just a hint of apple. The taste opens with lots of malty caramel but it's quickly balanced by dry bitterness and a touch of rye and earthy char. As it warms there are notes of apple and berry but there's little sweetness beyond the initial malt. It has a nice, creamy mouthfeel with an appropriate level of carbonation and the 8% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Hel Crow is a well-brewed and thoroughly enjoyable Red Ale. I wouldn't hesitate to order it if I see it available.
