this is really everything you could want from the style, a drinkable but robust porter that has enough rye malt in it to actually appreciate. its deep dark brown, sturdy and frothy in the glass, with a tall tan head and rich foamy lace as i drink on it. spicy nose from the rye right away, milk chocolate, black pepper, toasted bread crusts, and dr pepper soda, pretty compelling mix of aromas here, they may have used some chocolate rye malt in here, something more than just the pale rye, or they just used a lot of it. i love the rye in the flavor, its earthy and grounding for a beer that might run a little sweet without it, and there is a cool late summer harvesty agricultural sort of element to this that turns me on. lots of chocolate too though, milk and dark both in the flavor, a really nice malt build to this. smooth to drink on, not at all harsh from the rye and with plenty of body, slippery and satisfying going down, and roasty and even a little bitter after the swallow. toasted nuts and rye spice at the end. an excellent glass of porter and one of the better lowdown beers i have had in awhile! really exceptional stuff.
