from a technical standpoint, this is the best beer these guys make. its creamy and rich from the nitro tap, extremely dry but fuller bodied and also drinkable for miles, its as good as an american brewer can make this style, and while its a somewhat simplistic brew, its also something that is darn near perfect, and cant be improved on, so why mess with it?! foamy and frothy from the tap, near black in color, with a lot of head and bubbles. tastes like dark dry malts, some roasted but not malted barley grain, and an irish ale yeast that really ends some flavor. hints of walnut and fresh tobacco, even bakers chocolate, but no reason to go searching for nuance here, this is a dry dark crusher, the kind of beer that was built for a hangover and one that stands up to any of the robust food on their menu while also remaining refreshing, which is not easy to do with stout types. the texture rules, and the flavor are on point for traditional. i like most of the beers these guys make, but this is flawless in some ways, really sensational. if you go here skeptically and have only one beer, this should be the one...
edit: they have a coffee version of this on tap right now, only did a keg or two from what they tell me, but its great, a subtle coffee profile is a nice add to the dry roasted middle of this, its not too much at all yet it adds an entirely new layer to this. hopefully they keep this version around...
