Here's a cool new collaborative DIPA by Banded (formerly Banded Horn) and Finback Brewery. This is an NEIPA clocking in at 8.3% that utilizes flaked oats, Maine pilsner and white wheat alongside a hop combo that seems incredibly intriguing from the outset: Ella, Eureka! and Simcoe. This was canned only 8 days ago, by the way. Very fresh! What does this beer have in store for me?
The pour is a pretty opaque light orange-cream color with a big dollop of meringue-like head of eggshell-white foam. This displays some amazing lace and has excellent legs, so I'm pretty much impressed right off the bat. The surface is totally hazed over with suds and, honestly, this might be one of the best looking IPA pours I've seen lately. Very creamy and dense. The head is easily re-roused with just a slight swirl of the glass, too, which is just a bonus.
The nose here is very insistent on the Ella hops, I must admit. They provide unique spice-like notes, grassiness and a little bit of grapefruit rind. Combined with the Simcoe, this really has a dank and intense profile! Simcoe is known for its strong pine and sticky citrus, so the cross with the grassy, peppery and spicy Ella really hits on all cylinders. Eureka hops are a little more unknown to me, but they are apparently similar to Simcoe, interestingly enough. It tends to have a bit more tropical fruit to it, but I really don't get that here. Stone fruit is pretty prominent here, with some apricot and peach coming across pretty heavily. Great stuff!
The flavor is dank and bitter with a big focus, once again, on the Ella hops. Strong white peppercorn presence with a backing elements of ruby-red grapefruit rind, dankness and fresh-cut grass. Backing notes of pine resin and guava with some nutmeg and baking spice hitting the corners of my palate. Wow, this is complex and very interesting while still retaining a lot of familiar character. I still think Ella would work really well (maybe even better) in something like an imperial witbier, funky saison or dry-hopped hefeweizen, but it is nice here for sure.
The feel is well-rounded with lower-leaning carbonation and the typical full-bodied element that NEIPAs tend to display prominently. No doubt the oats and wheat help this beer big-time in the mouthfeel department. This is a really cool brew, and seems to be among the best offerings from both of these brewers in a while. Finback has been killing it lately, honestly, and Banded has been doing some pretty good things as well. Let's hope this trend continues!

Canned on 8/10/18
Pours a bright, hazy yellow with a finger of white head.
Aroma is zesty and herbal, with lemon, floral, and light citrus tones eventually giving way to really unique, earthy grains, wheat, and strangely enough, a hint of peanut.
Tastes of tempered dank grapefruit and pine, with wheat and oat characteristics taking hold on the back end; the finish again has these really intriguing nutty elements.
Mouthfeel is easy and very, very soft on the palate; medium carbonation and an unexpected level of juiciness adds to things nicely; absolutely no hint of that 8.3 ABV.
A well-constructed DIPA with a flavor profile ultimately leaving me confounded; it's not that it's bad, just so unusual. I've come to notice this boldness in many Finback brews, so it's not as surprising with this collaboration; I'm just not exactly sure this one is up my alley.
