This is my first brush with Four Quarters' Shakedown series, which all seem to be milkshake IPAs with different adjuncts and hop additions curated to benefit the overall beer while highlighting the added ingredients. Sounds like a good idea, but I'm very iffy on milkshake IPAs. Let's hope that this is one of the good ones.
The pour struck me as slightly-iffy right off the bat, because the head formed so quickly and intensely that I just sensed this would be infected right from the start. The froth never really settles below three fingers, which is pretty intense, and the legs here are superb. Almost looks like a Dole Whip, which is apropos due to the pineapple addition. The color is a hazy golden hue with almost full opacity. I'm interested in what's gonna happen here... will it be infected?
My first sniffs of the nose are pretty bland, giving off some herbal hoppiness, light citrus and tropical fruit, and wheat/barley graininess, but nothing that specifically screams "pineapple" to me. Honestly, considering the Citra addition, I'm surprised this doesn't pop out of the glass. It's a touch grassy and rather anonymous overall, with flashes of yeasty esters and mango kicking around once it acclimates to being in my glass.
Flavor profile is a bit more interesting, with some good notes of orange and pineapple combined with the smooth, vanilla-esque lactose toward the finish. A bright flash of mango and papaya in the mid-palate is quickly squashed by the compressed malt profile, but the smoothness and general overall feel are pretty good for this sub-style. I'm happy with how unobtrusive and surprisingly-beneficial the lactose is here, but I still would definitely like to see the pineapple pushed. For that matter, this could also stand to use more Citra, and perhaps another hop to highlight some other interesting flavors, such as El Dorado or Bru-1.
Anyway, I'm unclear on what the "double" in the name of this beer refers to, because it's not a DIPA, and it's probably not DDH, so I can only assume that means they had a Pineapple Shakedown before and doubled the pineapple? They should probably triple it or use an extract to get it to come out here, because it's definitely overshadowed by the fact that this is a milkshake IPA. It's just not bright or spunky enough to support whatever fruit addition went into it. That said, I'd probably try the others in this series just to see if the issue with the fruit is relegated specifically to this iteration. And then I'd probably give up after a couple because this brewery is extremely inconsistent recently.
