32oz from an Aslan “grunt” received from the incomparable beertunes, filled for approx. $8 at the River City taproom. According to the info on River City’s chalkboard, this has 110 IBUs and is 8.5% abv. The name comes from the iconic clocktower in Spokane's Riverfront Park, the only portion of the old railroad depot that was retained when the rest of it was razed for the '74 Expo.
Poured into a Widmer basketball-themed nonic glass, this was initially a clear, amber color, then some chill haze kicked in. Good-sized off white head that left lots of lace on the sides of the glass.
Grapefruity hops and caramelish malts are at almost equal aromatic strength.
The taste is similar to the smell, but the hops are a little more diverse, with some pine and tea-like flavors. The hops lead the charge, but this is a malty example of the style to be sure. There’s also what may be a bit of diacetyl that comes in midway through, giving a slight candy apple flavor.
This is at the heavy end of Medium bodied, with a creamy yet slightly oily mouthfeel.
This is a beer that definitely won’t appeal to hardcore hop heads, as its’ malt backbone is considerable. For those that aren’t into their enamel getting burned off by Alpha oils, this is a decent bet, but it’s not something I’d want to session. I’ll undoubtedly drink this again at RC’s tasting room, but 32 ounces is enough today.
