32oz grunt purchased at River City’s taproom for $8. Apparently it’s not a true barrel-aged beer (I don’t think River City has the space for barrel aging). Rather, the beer was aged with oak chips that were soaked in Shieldaig Highland Peaty single-malt scotch whiskey. The base is River City’s Midnight Marmot Imperial Stout, which clocks in at 8.7% abv and 78 IBUs.
The pour into a River City snifter was viscous and dark, almost black. When held up to light, none was able to shine through. A good-sized mocha colored head perched atop the beer before withdrawing to a thin collar after a few minutes, though it was easily agitated back to life.
Rich aroma, with elements of sweetness, smoke, leather and coffeeish bitterness.
The taste starts out with a brown sugary sweetness, and is theh almost immediately matched with a smoky, peaty woodsiness from the soaked oak chips. I get flavors of dark pipe tobacco as well, along with a tanginess reminiscent of soy sauce. Things finish on a dry note.
The body’s a little thin for the style, which seems to be a River City trademark. The mouthfeel is creamy, coating and sticky.
This is a worthy variation on a locally brewed imperial stout, and were it to become a regular in River City’s lineup, I would regularly drink it.
