On tap at La Verne Brewing Co.
Pretty Schwartzbier. A tad darker than usual, but forms a solid, cocoa colored foam, retention is solid, and leaves layered lacing.
Nose is pretty firm on the roast. Malt comes through after.
Flavor follows the nose. Strong roast, between coffee and char, and really takes up a lot of room. The malts do come in with a hint of caramel and brown bread but timidly.
Mouthfeel has a nice medium heft, moderate carbonation, and a dry charred bitter finish.
Overall, if somebody told me this was a smoked porter, I'd get it. But the malty notes stray a bit from style.
