it was cool to get to drink multiple vintages of this in the same sitting, i love that these guys do this. the server just called it russian imperial stout, but i am sure its this same beer. i had one from 2017 or 2018, and one from this year or last year, quite a bit of variance here and not least because their brewer has changed at least once in that span. the older one is definitely lighter in color and body, the new one fuller and blacker. they both hold a little head from the tap, and have strong roasty aromas. some oxidation in the older one, some sweetness too, charcoal and oak, a light whiskey note, subtle vanilla and honey, raisin, and very little alcohol coming through. the newer one has more bitter roast, coffee, dark chocolate, and feels richer to me, a little spiciness on it, and also a little woody nuance, perhaps an english ale strain fermenting both, but i taste it more in the newer vintage. i think the older one is more complex, but i think the newer one is objectively better. i should have boned up and done the full flight, i think they have four or five different years pouring in here right now, neat to get to do a side by side. i think the overall quality here has improved over the years, and it shows in this beer, but i like the old one too. both true to style russian imperial stouts, but they hardly even seem like the same recipe. this place is grossly underappreciated...

Plenty of warmth, but not as deep and dark as I would have preferred. Pours out black and slick, slippery mouth feel, but taste and aroma a bit subdued for the style. Re-rate 12/31/15, bumped up a bit

Draft tonight at the brewery ... $5ish for a 10oz goblet pour... Thin dark tan head shows no lacing and little retention.. A bit too much licorice on the nose and palate for my liking .. Traditional RIS elements show as deep toast, dark grains, a bit of char and some dark fruit notes .. A little molasses with warmth.. So shows quite a bit of EtOH. Mouthfeel is a bit slick.. Surprised.. Pretty good.
Not a bad go around for a big boned stout from a new brewery. I would buy this one again.
