Inspired by the great canned ales of the American Northeast, Ol’ Zippy features a crisp malt flavor and a snappy hop aroma. The hop zing carries through the flavor as the beer comes to a clean finish with a pleasant, subtle sweetness derived from flaked maize. This is truly a premium American ale.

12 oz. can into willibecher

A- Dark honey in color. Highly filtered. Head white, but retention is not great. Still some good lacing left.
S- Toasty malt. A bit of biscuit. Hop is a little herbal/ piney. Subtle sweetness., citrus.
T- Toasty malt, earthen hop.
M- Crisp, light body, a bit of a linger.
O- Pretty straightforward. A bit like a classic lager, yet some deeper ale notes.

Head and lacing are present and long lasting. Aroma is initially bready, yeasty, yogurt with light pine and citrus. Palate confirms bread, grain, light malt, sourdough with bright lemon, lime, grapefruit, pine backsplash. Finish is of caramel, sweet pastry, crisp. Mouthfeel is velvety with just slight stickiness. Pros are refreshing, easy drinking, balanced, complex. Cons are a little sweet, bready, not quite hoppy enough, some graininess. 90/100.

Crisp, Hoppy, Maize, Dry

This beer pours pale golden with creamy white lace. The nose is sweetly floral with a hint of corn. It’s crisp, dry, and hoppy up front with a hint of fruitiness, some breadiness and a soft maize sweetness beneath that coats the palate. Quite clean and bone-dry in the finish. The addition of flaked maize lightens things up and adds a unique layer of sweetness. Simple, straightforward, balanced, and flavorful, Ol' Zippy is one hell of a crushable Premium American Ale.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #119 (December 2016).

Crystal-clear, gold colored body; not much carbonation and the head is thin yet lasting and sticky. Grain and corn-like scent. Cereal grain flavors with a light toasted quality; husky sweetness; good off-setting hop bitterness. Medium body; glass smooth; finishes dry and powdery.

The Post Brewery web site states that flaked maize is used to give this beer a subtle sweetness. I'll buy into that. This beer has a nice balance of malt and grain sweetness with a noticeable yet hardly aggressive hop bitterness. I little more carbonation might have improved the appearance and mouthfeel, yet overall, this is an enjoyable ale.

a pale ale they have added some corn to. im not sure it makes the most sense in the world, the sweetness the corn brings goes weird with the hops, which i find more bitter than flavorful, and there isnt much body here, so it all seems a little out of whack. that said, its fresh enough, well carbonated, and pretty easy drinking and mass appealing for the style, and could be a good gateway sort of craft beer, but this runs into some of the same issues i have found in many of their other beers, which is that its thin and overly bitter, like its had too long of a boil and not enough grain in the mash, or too long of a sparge, like its diluted a bit. one thing to make a session beer, another to make a watery pale ale. this is more of the latter to me. major potential though, i can see a world where the corn sweetness balances the hop bitterness a little better, and that might really work. for now i think it need a few tweaks, but it still has some solid refreshment value when its ice cold. does not warm up real well though...

edit: this has gotten better since it was first released. had one from the can at their chicken spot on broadway last night and it was excellent, far better than my review stated above here. going to bump up flavor and mouthfeel scores to reflect the latest iteration of this one, its far better than it was for whatever reason, recipe tweaks, freshness, whatever. tasty beer now, darker and more substantial, better balance.
