Big thanks to Mark for passing one of these along one day last week! Thanks!Gose to Mexico...is one of the most vibrantly colored beers I have ever seen. As a matter of fact it looks like red Kool Aid, it's that bright. Good clarity runs throughout as carbonation streams to the surface from a from a few spots at glass bottom. A crackling, active foam rises to a finger in height on the pour, it's also tinted red, but eventually fades a a surface skimming. Interesting looking beer, this is.
It's funny, with a vibrant color I can't help but expect something different in the nose but what I get is gose all the way with a backend fruity tartness. Tangy, soured wheat leads it off and is the star of this show. A touch of ground coriander pops up in the middle before the additions come in. Wet stone and a softly metallic character, iron mostly, come through thanks to the addition of lacto while the prickly pear adds a soft, yet unspecific, fruity sweetness. A little popcorn-y with a touch of diacetyl.
That wheat twang hits off the bat, slightly soured and delicious. Faint coriander runs the middle along with hard water. Some of that minerality and wet stone comes into play again on the palate, and I like it. The salt kicks in on the finish, nice and even handed. There is a touch of diacetyl here and there but it tends to clear up as the beer warms. Again, the prickly pear brings some vague fruity sweetness, and a little earthiness, to the finish.
The body sits squarely between light and moderate with a zippy carbonation that keeps the whole moving. There is a coating quality to this beer which is odd for such a light body. A little tartness hits the sides and back of the tongue. Honestly, it leaves a film of sorts after each drink. It's easily drinkable and highly refreshing but that film kind of throws me a bit.
Gose to Mexico... is a good beer from the folks at Hailstorm and Arrowhead. It's bright and refreshing. A good summer sipper for sure and the 6-pack format doesn't hurt either. A touch tart, a touch fruity, and salty enough to get your salivary glands working in anticipation of the next sip. Certainly worth a shot.
