I got a 4pck of this from Binnys. It poured a cloudy orangish with thin white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had hints of dank fruit. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink for an ipa. There was a strong citrus peel spice. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a decent beer.

Pours a slightly right golden orange with a finger of fluffy off-white foam.
Resiny dankness and a nice and bright citrusy character.
Citrusy and resinous hop profile comes out in flavor as well.
Light-medium bodied, medium carbonation, resinous, firm but laid back bitterness.
Overall, not a home run by any means, but a highly drinkable attempt at the style.

Aroma is citrus/fruit, light sweetness and a hint of vanilla. The flavor is citrus/fruit, malts and a mix of hops/very light hop resin, spices and slightly dry finish.

Thanks for this one Dan!
Saturated orange with a light haze, trails of rising carbonation, and a fluffy billowing head of foam. Chunks of sudsy lacing and lasting surface coverage.
Aroma is resiny with a citrus element, grapefruit peel and light pale malt. Taste is resiny and bitter with dandelion greens and grapefruit peel, hint of bready pale malt in the back. Light to medium bodied with ample carb, easy drinking. Overall solid, I think the Banaba version was better though.

West Coast Style IPA tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 1 pint can on February 22, 2017. 75 IBU. Canned 2/16/17. Look is gold orange with a thick white head and lingering lacing. Taste is bitter. Feel is dry.

My first from Hailstorm. As the first review for Makatea, I should not be biased against this effort by Hailstorm and, instead, make my confession: I'm not a big fan of hop(e)d-up beers. At 75 IBU, I should have known Makatea was not for me.
The pint can does have a nice Flavor Profile graphic that offers summaries for 3 of the 5 factors that BA rates. I could quibble with their ratings as marketing. But, their three factors are accurate enough.
Makatea Looks light even for an IPA.
Not on their graphic, it Smells mostly tropical fruity... but I get some pine.
The taste is unquestionably bitter (too much so to me).... but I detect a respectable malt backbone.
The after-taste is harsh, needs refining. The Feel is otherwise OK.
But, the negatives worked out as I drank the second half of the pint while eating Indian leftovers.
This is not a sessionable ale to me... but OK amidst a flight of four.
Makatea is good enough for me to consider a journey to support this effort to further the spread of Chicagoland's beer culture. While Hailstorm has some 60+ beers heavily weighted toward the British tradition, it does have a couple of highly rated Belgians. And since I just saw their cans for the first time, they must have limited distribution in the City. While close to I-80, I still don't think I'll drive to the taproom. To Hailstorm's credit, they are less than 1/2 mile from the Metra stop. So at least they thought about the alternative, of taking the train instead of drinking and driving. It's one of the luxuries of living in Chicago.
