they call this a scottish ale, but it may more rightly be a scotch ale, insofar as we are still calling out a difference. this is pretty robust and bigger feeling, with some detectable alcohol and a little residual sweetness as well, a pleasant flavor profile, not overly complex or anything, but a reasonably well made beer. these guys are in transition to a new name and a rebrand and all, but the beer still tasted pretty good when i was in. this one has some european yeast character to it, even a slight phenolic thing to it, but its squarely malt driven, with notes of toffee, molasses, and an almost long boiled barleywine type caramelized grain sugar complexion. i get a slight floral thing going on, but this still seems like a fall and winter beer to me with its weight. traces of almond, tea, and brown sugar run through it, and the yeast that lingers a little at the end. like their stout in here, a little cleaning up would go a long way, but this shows some promise and some competence too. looking forward to seeing what they turn this place into...
