We had Melkor, called an Imperial Milk Stout, on tap at Fogbelt in Santa Rosa at the same time as Federation Giant, so compared them side by side. Melkor, we were told, is the base beer for the similar Federation Giant, which has coffee added. We loved both, but I preferred Melkor.
Melkor is black with a creamy tan head slowly shrinking to a thin foamy top. Aroma is chocolate, prunes, and dark bread. Taste is smooth and rich, dark milk chocolate,prunes, dark bread. Fully body. Firm sweetness with balancing zesty woody bitterness. Feel leans lightly to lively side.
