if you're unfamiliar with what Chaga is, it's a parasitic fungi that infects mostly white birch in colder climates. People have been grinding Chaga for a Millenia for use as a dietary supplement as well as medicinal uses.
A- Pours a deep translucent black topped by a thin cap of tan head.
S- Typical stout smell: Roasty malt with a hint of dark chocolate
T- Roasty malt, dark chocolate, with an interesting aftertaste that I assume is the work of the chaga.
M- Excellent medium body that feels substantial without being overwhelming. Low-Medium carbonation that fits the style guidelines.
O- Before trying Big Axe's Chaga Porter, I certainly would have thought a beer brewed with a fungus as a repulsive idea but I have found quite the contrary with Chaga Porter. The Chaga provides an interesting (in a good way) flavour profile that adds to the already tasty roastiness that is usually found in a Porter.
