12oz bottle courteous of a very generous CR
Pours a deep oak brown with a 1/4" off white head. No where near black, but it looks good.
The smell is that of opening the mash tun and smelling a rich 2-Row and Caramel wort. Absolutely no hop on the nose.
This is where this beer shines. The taste has a luscious malt sweetness only found in world class English pale ales. It is perfectly balanced by a now very assertive hop bitterness that leaves a welcomed pine note.
The mouthfeel is very balanced and not dry at all, medium carbonation.
I hope they release this one to the market, just don't call it "Black IPA"

On tap at the brewpub, 3/20/11.
A-Not at all black, not substantially darker than Hop Devil, really. Plenty of frothy tan head and a nice sheet of lacing.
S-Earthy bitter hops and some roasted malt.
T-Nice roasted malt character with moderate bitterness. Nicely balanced with crisp earthy hops.
M-Medium bodied, nicely dry with good carbonation.
O-A nice beer though not a particularly memorable one.
