08/04/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum. Not sure what going on here. I'm a bitter fan but this one seems to have both feet out of the box. There's fruitiness in there but I can't figure which one. Citrusy...maybe grapefruit...but shy. IMO when playing in that sandbox you've got to step up, otherwise....Lots of flavor but just not my favo' flav...gnome' sayin'.

Was expecting an actual English Bitter. This beer is more akin to another west coast pale ale. Way, way too bitter, no malt character, all hops in the face, on the palate, and all over the finish. I will be so happy when American breweries learn how to make English style beers. This ain't it. If you want a low abv American style pale ale, you'll like this not-an-English bitter.

Nice amber-y blood orange color. Lip of head keeps coverage, although short in height. Okay.
Pine and orange from the hops. Slightly tea-like with toasty aromas from the malts. Even a slight coffee bean aroma. Strange, but good.
English malts deliver toasted grain and a bitter coffee flavor, all the while, that Mandarina hop is pushing orange rind, pine, and herbal notes right at the forefront. Tea notes didn't translate, but there is a woody green leafiness from the hops. Great finishing bitterness. Almost earthy near the end.
Medium carbonation. Body is lighter and crisp. Picks up some added burp in the end.
Decent bitter. Really just excited about more Mandarina hop. This works, though.
