From a 650 ml bottle (dated March 3, 2015) to a snifter. Reviewed from notes dated March 14, 2016.
A-The beer is black and opaque with a medium-brown head. Foam is dense and retention is pretty good for the ABV and style. No lacing or bubbles to be seen.
S-The aroma is a pleasant mixture of brownie-batter chocolate flavors with a mild roasted bitterness that is tempered somewhat by a creamy marshmallow note. The barrel comes through in the form of caramel and vanilla. A touch of raspy oak, too.
T-The taste is pretty similar to the smell. Dark chocolate and roasted malts balance against a marshmallow sweet creaminess. The roasted grains give way to sweet, dark fruit (prunes come to mind) as the beer warms and the barrel makes its presence known with heavy doses of caramel.
M-The body is medium in heft, but the beer drinks clean with very little stickiness for the style. Carbonation is lighter in volume.
O-A solid BA stout from the other side of the country. This beer is not as well put together as the best examples of the style, but it was pretty tasty and I would readily drink more from Innovation. Thanks to Shawn for letting me in on this.
