Sweet, malty, boozy. Slightly peppery finish

 

 

 

Poured from a 12 oz can into a snifter.

L - Medium brown with a definite red cast. Amazingly clear. Low, tan head quickly cleared to a thin ring around the glass, but that is appropriate for the style.

S - Strong malt aromas include lightly charred grain and strong smoke. Some dried fruit (prunes, raisins) on the nose as well. No hops or fermentation notes, which is also as appropriate for the style.

T - The flavors follow the aromas, but with less prominent smoke than on the nose. The grain, dried fruit and smoke turn into a complex blend that gains depth as it warms.

F - Body seems thin for the style. Carbonation is suitably restrained, as is the hops bitterness. The alcohol is evident, but not too assertive.

O - This is a good example of a style that is hard for me to find from US craft brewers, and is not often done well by them, in my opinion. I think it is a bit heavy on the smoke compared to typical Scottish examples, but it is otherwise accurate and enjoyable.

 

 

 

Good version of a style that there isn't enough good beers in. My only gripe is that the alcohol taste is a little too prominent. Overall though I quite enjoyed it.

12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 7/28/2016. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, toasted biscuit, raisin, plum, fig, pear, apricot, and red apple; with light notes of roast, toffee, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. A bit too fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, toasted biscuit, raisin, plum, fig, pear, apricot, and red apple; with light notes of roast, toffee, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, toasted biscuit, raisin, plum, fig, pear, apricot, red apple, light roast/toffee, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.2%. Overall this is a very nice scotch ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Rich malts, modest fruity yeast, and light earthy hop balance against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example. I am sure the age has improved it, even though I have never had it before.

As expected, this wee heavy has a clear dark brown body with a good tan head.
Medium body and carbonation.
It's a solid if unexceptional (ignoring the NC origin), malt forward wee heavy with no detectable flaws. Lingering dark malt aftertaste. Mildly bitter.
