Another German style that highlights beechwood smoked malt from Bamberg along with Munich malt to produce a rich malty brew with a moderate smoke flavor that is a great starter rauch for those new to the smoked beer experience.

On tap at brewery:
Pours a deep ruby/auburn, fairly clear if you ignore the color that gets in the way of this facet. Head isn't much on a full pour, but a 1/3 moon rusty white collection of bubbles sticks to the surface.
Nose is a nice smoky note, not acrid in any sense. It's more like from a smoker. There's a caramel to toffee note that plays with the smoke, fairly well.
A light feel, but with a little friction as it crosses the tongue. Carbonation is light but far from flat.
A woody note goes with an amber malt base with a little herbal tea aspect to it. Smoke is more obvious cold, oddly. It adds an almost roasted aspect in general. As the beer warms, it seems to stay to the sides of the palate, more as an accent than being a force itself.
I enjoyed this beer, but really want some more from the smoke in the taste. Reading the description of this beer as a "starter for smoked beer," I can say I think that is probably true.
