A good ole fashioned fisticuffs broke out between malt sweetness and mild earthy hops, resulting in a remarkably well balanced Brown Ale. It’s not too sweet and and not too bitter. Just a scrappy down to earth ale with a medium dry-finish. When the dust settles you will be left slacked jawed, stunned, and wanting more.

650ml bottle from LCBO. Pours dark brown with ruby hints and a rather overactive, frothy, parchment coloured head. Aroma: dark fruit, prunes, caramel, some spice. Similarly in the flavour - hopping light just enough to take the edge off the malt sweetness.

650 ml bottle purchased from Fortinos for around $5.25 CDN. Served cold into a pint glass.
Appearance - Pours a dark brown beer with red highlights. A creamy and frothy two fingers of head rest on top with impressive staying power. A curtain of froth lingers at the edges of the glass.
Smell - Loads of malt here, with caramel and molasses being most prominent mixed in with some dark fruits namely plums and cherries.
Taste - Plenty of malt again, initially caramel and molasses, hints of fruit although less so than on the nose. Finishes with a nutty twist and some earthy bitterness, a little less sweet across the board than expected. Sort of a cardboard flavor in there at the end with mineral flavor.
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation, noticeably drying finish, compared with other ales of this ilk.
Overall - A good if not great English brown ale. Wish the fruitiness and malt flavors shone through a little more as that would make this a personal fave. Worth a shot but a bit pricey for what it is.

750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery, and served slightly chilled. I tried this nut brown ale shortly after the brewery's grand opening and didn't really mind it, but I must admit I haven't returned to it since.
Pours a muddy, brownish-amber hue, with ruby-red highlights and one finger of relatively short-lived, off-white head. It wastes no time receding, leaving behind a thin film and an equally scant, bubbly collar. The aroma is fairly malty, with notes of brown sugar, toasted hazelnut, bready malts and some earthiness. Not exactly memorable, but basically what I'd expect from this style.
Malty, sweet flavours are the most dominant features of this beer, but the tail end of the profile does its best to balance things out. Toffee, caramel and a hint of plum fruitiness are detectable, with notes of toasted nuts. The finish is bittersweet, with earthy hops and nut skins valiantly attempting to keep the malty sweetness in check. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a relatively smooth mouthfeel. This is a boring beer, but it's easy to drink and doesn't have any overtly annoying traits.

650 mL bottle from the brewery. It's never my first choice in their fridge, but Brouhaha has evolved into a pretty decent nut brown. Gotta bump the grade upward - it's an above average brown ale that is likely to appeal to the malt fans, for sure.
Final Grade: 3.55, a B.
