Growler picked up fresh from the brewery; served slightly chilled. Brewed with Centennial hops, I believe the name of this unfiltered pale wheat ale is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the ugly, temporary fence that city authorities put up last year to encircle Centennial Park - ostensibly to protect the helpless citizens of Sarnia from asbestos, or lead, or whatever the hell they buried underneath it before some Rhodes scholar decided to build a playground there.
Pours a cloudy straw-yellow colour, topped with one finger of soapy, white froth that disappears steadily over the next few minutes. A modest collar remains behind, with a few swaths of sticky lacing, to boot. The aroma is fairly sweet and straightforward, with pale wheat malts, citrusy lemon zest and orange peel being the primary features. Rather witbier-like, without the spiciness.
A nice, light, summer thirst-quencher. Pale, wheaty malt sweetness comes through initially, followed by a mixture of orange citrus and lemon. Mild banana sweetness is also detectable, with a lightly tart finish that fades quickly from the palate. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with fairly aggressive carbonation and slightly watery feel on the palate. This is a very refreshing, sessionable pale wheat ale as-is, but it could stand to be slightly less thin.
Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. Centennial's Fence is sure to be a crowd-pleaser this summer, as it offers up a simple, tasty flavour profile that should be agreeable to most beer drinkers, whether they prefer craft or macro offerings. Good stuff; this is one of Refined Fool's lighter beers to date and it certainly drinks that way. Don't expect to be blown away by this one, but you should probably expect to be surprised at how quickly you reach the bottom of the growler...
