Growler picked up fresh from the brewery. Another seasonal offering, and the lightest (by abv) of this brewery's beers to date, by far. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy orange-amber colour, topped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that quickly fades into a soapy cap and collar. A few strands of scattered lace remain. The aroma consists mostly of mild doughy malts; sweet and slightly biscuity, with honey, caramel and some earthy hop notes also contributing to the overall bouquet.
Lighter than a light lager, but much more flavourful. Lots of doughy malt sweetness, with honey and a touch of toffee also coming through. This is followed by some leafy, green, bitter weedy hop notes that leave an earthy feel behind in the aftertaste. Light-bodied and somewhat watery; very refreshing, and at 3.5% this is obviously intended as a session ale, so it works out nicely. The carbonation is quite low, which contributes to the thin body, but I can't say it's entirely unappealing.
Final Grade: 3.59, a B grade. The Guvna is about as close as you'll get to an authentic, fresh English-style cask ale in this town. It's a mild-tasting, refreshing session brew that is far more flavourful than your typical North American "light beer", with a supremely soft, smooth mouthfeel that just isn't easy to find around here. Reminds me slightly of Tetley's, maybe crossed with Railway City's Ironspike Copper - approachable and enjoyable, but not really remarkable.
