750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery, and served well-chilled.

An aggressive pour reveals a hazy, brownish-amber coloured brew, topped with one finger of loose, bubbly off-white head. It wilts rapidly over the next minute or two, with only a thin cap and frothy collar remaining. Not much to look at, but the aroma has some rather interesting features, the most unusual being hints of raspberry and chocolate. The underlying malts come off as being a little nutty, with brown sugar and a touch of toasted biscuit.

Not a complex affair, but much more up my alley than their past few seasonals. The malts are decidedly nutty in nature, with brown sugar and whole-grain bread sweetness working nicely alongside hints of pecan and walnut. Some mild berry-like fruitiness, with an earthy, nut skin bitterness toward the finish that fades gradually into the bittersweet aftertaste. Light in body, with relatively weak carbonation that only lightly prickles the palate, providing a largely smooth, neutral mouthfeel. Somewhat watery, but that is my only real complaint.

Final Grade: 3.61, a B grade. Grandad's Slipper is a pleasant German brown ale, and IMHO it's considerably better than their most recent couple of one-offs. I have had enough experience with altbiers to feel comfortable professing Refined Fool's effort as a passable interpretation. The mouthfeel is a little thin, and the fruitiness is a little too prominent - but other than that, this still makes for a splendid session ale. Worth a shot if you're stopping by the brewery.
