750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery a week or two ago; served slightly chilled.
Pours an opaque chestnut brown colour, capped off by an inch of light beige-coloured head with the texture of sponge toffee. It seeps away gradually over the next five minutes or so, leaving behind a thin film at the surface and a modest collar. The aroma includes elements of caramel, toasted nuts, vanilla, coffee grounds and dark fruits - about what I expect from this style, along with a hint of their house yeast.
This is a beautifully balanced strong ale. Toffee sweetness and big, toasted, nutty malts come through at first, seguing into a mixture of plum, raisin and chocolate. The latter flavour becomes increasingly bitter/dark toward the tail end, finishing with an earthy bitterness, vanilla and some mildly rummy sweetness lingering on into the aftertaste. Medium-bodied, with restrained carbonation that gently prickles the palate. The 8% becomes a bit more noticeable as it warms, but this beer seems to drink much lighter than you'd expect.
Final Grade: 3.97, a very respectable B+. The Auld Wee Heavy is easily one of the better seasonals that Refined Fool has put out over the past year, and basically just a solid strong, malt-forward ale in general. This is not a particularly complex beer, but it is very flavourful, expertly balanced and the sturdy alcohol content is well-masked. Great stuff that I hope to see available next December. Happy New Year's Eve, BA!
