750 mL bottle picked up from the brewery, and served slightly chilled. Not quite released in time for Gruit Day, but the effort is appreciated nonetheless.

This one is a murky brownish-amber colour, with an aggressive pour producing a half-inch of bubbly, short-lived, off-white head. No lace or collar; it looks positively flat. The aroma is quite herbal and leafy, with plenty of juniper and spicy rye overlying notes of caramel, plum and date.

The flavour profile follows the aroma pretty closely; leaning toward the sweet side. Caramel and rye malt comprise the backbone, followed up with a mixture of juniper and rich dried fruit sweetness. Dates, fig and raisin all come to mind, but in the end it is the herbal juniper that lasts into the spicy, leafy finish - along with some noticeable boozy sweetness. Medium-bodied, and not nearly as flat as it looks - the carbonation is restrained, providing a good, crisp bite that happens to work out well with the rye and juniper. It softens with time, but the beer doesn't necessarily improve as the glass warms.

Final Grade: 3.46, a B-. Anne of Gruit Gables is an interesting experiment, but one bottle will be plenty for me, thanks. With only one other sahti under my belt, I can't really say how well this beer happens to conform to the style. As an herbed beer, it's not bad at all, but I have little interest in drinking something like this on a regular basis. I'm a gin fan, so the juniper-heavy flavour profile randomly happened to rub me the right way, but your mileage may vary. Worth a shot simply because it's one of Refined Fool's more exotic releases - and almost certainly not the last of that stripe.
