Pours caramel colour and headless. Caramel, toffee and brown sugar on the smell. The taste adds to the previous ingredient list, some bitterness and some metallic notes. Mouthfeel seems a bit thin

750 mL bottle from the brewery, served slightly chilled. This is not a style I have much experience with at all, so expect a pretty subjective review.
Pours a translucent copper-amber colour, capped off with one finger of loose, fizzy off-white head. It dissipates completely over the next 30 seconds, leaving behind no cap or collar; not even a smidge of lace. It looks like flat root beer, but looks are only skin deep - the aroma is considerably more enticing. Quite earthy, leafy and dirty on the nose, and a touch metallic; sort of like a copper penny. There are also very mild suggestions of brown sugar sweetness, with some bready malt and toasted hazelnut.
Well-balanced, with a straightforward flavour profile that most should find approachable. Malty flavours of brown sugar, bready malt and toasted nuts are dominant initially, with a mild hint of plum. Leafy, grassy hop bitterness provide some necessary counterbalance, with the sip finishing on a dirty, earthy, somewhat metallic note that does not linger long. Light-medium in body, with relatively light carbonation that weakly prickles the palate. Maybe a bit on the thin side, but highly refreshing, and something I could see myself returning to repeatedly.
Final Grade: 3.78, a B+. Given that I have not had a California Common in years now, it's hard to say how well Refined Fool's Kevin represents this style. Elements of the flavour are reminding me of an ESB, and I'd venture to guess that most English session ale fans would consider this to be a worthwhile offering. I find this to be a very agreeable, simple sort of lunch pail ale - well-suited to camping, patio quaffing, bonfires and the like. A solid summer seasonal; well worth sampling if you have the chance.
