750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery; served slightly chilled. Are they talking about John Stamos? Because damn him - with his jet-black hair and winning smile! You should see my car - it's a mess. I'm a mess!
Pours a hazy, effervescent golden-yellow colour, topped off with nearly two fingers of spongy, puffy white head that displays good retention. By the five minute mark, it has receded down to a denser, more manageable cap and collar. Relatively light on the aroma, but quite approachable - citrusy grapefruit and mandarin orange are probably the most noticeable features, though there are also hints of other tropical fruit, including passionfruit and pineapple. There's some mild, bready wheat notes in the background, but the hops pretty much run the show, at least on the nose.
Not too shabby - this is a nice little pale ale that starts things off with a clean wheat malt backbone. Grainy, bready and a touch sweet; it provides a relatively neutral backdrop for the more assertive hop flavours to monopolize your attention. I am getting a lot of apricot/peach mid-sip, as well as hints of tropical fruit (mango and pineapple). Citrusy grapefruit and orange zest begins to dominate as you near the finish, ending with a mildly floral, pithy bitterness that is outlasted by a bit of juicy fruit sweetness in the aftertaste. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a touch of crispness, but this one feels more smooth and soft on the palate than anything. Super drinkable, and highly refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.82, a very serviceable B+. Sexy Uncle is almost better than a free sub sandwich. If you like hoppy pale ales and have a fondness for wheat beers, this brew will be right up your alley. The bitterness is rather moderated - though it is probably still bold enough to widen the eyes of the hop-uninitiated. Like all of Refined Fool's previous wheat beers, it is extremely sessionable, making it an ideal summer quaffer. A solid example of a beer style that I typically find to be a bit dull.
