750 mL bottle from the brewery; served slightly chilled.

Pours an opaque, black-brown cola colour with some reddish highlights, and topped off with over an inch of foamy beige-coloured head. It fades away continuously over the next couple of minutes, leaving behind a thin cap and bubbly collar, accompanied by a nice swath of sticky lacing. I was enamoured with this one's aroma after one solid whiff - it's not fancy, but it is intensely enticing, laden with rich, roasted malt goodness. Baker's chocolate and coffee come through clearly, accompanied by hints of molasses and oatmeal; touches of raisin and plummy dark fruit also become noticeable as it warms.

Tastes similar to the aroma, with a few adjustments - most notably, the fruitier aspects are a bit more noticeable, particularly mid-sip. It starts off with roasted, toasty malts - dark chocolate is quite prominent, with a bit of downplayed coffee flavour. Touches of treacle and oatmeal; plum and raisin also come through. Finishes with a roasty/charry flavour, including traces of coffee grounds and earthy, leafy hops. Light-medium in body, with subtle carbonation levels that gently agitate. The first gulp I had from the glass (with head) was creamy, but to be honest I feel that the mouthfeel is probably this beer's only real weak point. It's a touch thin... I just tend to expect a more silky-smooth, substantial mouth presence from this sort of beer. Not a fatal flaw, by any means - this is still a delicious beer that is exceptionally easy to drink.

Final Grade: 3.95, a respectable B+. By my tastes, I would argue that Refined Fool's stouts and porters are probably the best products that they produce. Their breakfast stout and bourbon vanilla porter are both very solid, and the (currently on-hiatus) milk stout was pretty good, as well. Second Breakfast right here is yet another feather that they can confidently stick in their cap; one that would be a welcome addition to elevenses - though not necessarily in this rather large, definitely-not-hobbit-sized format. Worth brewing again, and I expect I'll be back for more in the near future.
