750 mL bottle picked up fresh from the brewery; served well-chilled. As an Ontario resident that doesn't travel much, I don't have a whole lot of experience with this style, but I'll offer up my subjective ramblings in any case.
Pours a cloudy, pale straw-yellow colour, capped off with one inch of bright, white-coloured head. It fizzles away gradually over a two or three-minute period, leaving behind a thin, creamy cap and collar at the surface, along with a few splashes of seafoam lace. I'm getting a big whiff of pithy lemon and lime peel on the nose, with the rosemary also giving it a nice floral spice quality. The underlying wheaty malt sweetness is very subtle in comparison to these other features.
Considering that this is Refined Fool's first foray into sour territory, I am pretty damn impressed with this gose. The base of clean, pale, grainy wheat malts and light saltiness is largely superseded by flavours of tart lemon juice, as well as a somewhat pungent lemon-lime zest kick. The rosemary provides a subtly floral, herbal bitterness that creeps up on you at the finish, mingling with some leftover wheaty sweetness in the aftertaste. Light-bodied, with moderately assertive carbonation levels that provide a bit of spritzy lift to the mouthfeel. Extremely thirst-quenching, and quite tasty; this is just really easy to gulp down.
Final Grade: 3.99, an impressively high B+. Sours are untreaded territory for this brewery, but I am pleased to say that I find You Are Lazy, Susan to be a highly satisfying one. This gose's saltiness is subtle, but definitely helps to balance out the tart, citrusy flavour profile, while also complementing the rosemary astringency nicely. This beer is likely to earn the brewery a bit of 'beer geek street cred', but more importantly it is also the sort of light, refreshing, unique summer quaffer that could potentially appeal even to those who typically spurn beer in favour of other libations. An applause-worthy, adventurous effort that I recommend highly for the experience.
