750 mL wax-sealed bottle picked up at the brewery last week; served well-chilled.
Pours a clouded copper-amber colour, with one inch of creamy-looking head seated atop. Good retention; it fades slowly over the next 5-10 minutes or so, leaving behind a modest-sized frothy cap and collar. Ginger, cinnamon and honey were all used in the brewing of this beer, and each of those adjuncts is noticeable on the nose - particularly the first one, with a gingerbread vibe permeating the aroma. This is in addition to notes of doughy, toasted biscuit malts, sponge toffee sweetness and some floral, spicy hop characteristics.
An interesting beer that is both malt-forward and spice-forward. Toasted bread/biscuits, toffee malt and honey sweetness, along with a touch of sugarplum come through at first, with big notes of fresh gingerbread following closely in tow. Herbal and spicy on the back end - cinnamon mostly, with hints of earthy, herbal hop bitterness and clove. It has an earthy, dirty aftertaste that includes some cinnamon and nutmeg flavours which linger on the palate. The alcohol is barely perceptible during the aftermath of each sip. Medium-bodied, with low-ish carbonation levels and a soft mouthfeel. I'm not blown away by this one, but it's balanced and goes down with little fuss.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. Danglespanked is guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart on a cold Christmas Eve - at least I assume (because there hasn't really been any cold weather around here thus far this month). It's basically a winter warmer, with the emphasis placed mostly upon ginger/cinnamon and the malt bill - both good choices, and the final product is a highly serviceable, strong spiced ale. Not a world beater by any means, but I'm glad to have tried it.
