750 mL bottle from the brewery and served slightly chilled. The last in their current IPA series; this one brewed with apricots and habanero peppers.
Pours a muddy, pale brownish-yellow colour, with about one finger of attractive bone-white head. It fizzles down over the next minute or two, producing a collar of resilient foam and a few splashes of lacing. The aroma has a fruity bent to it, including some mushy apricot and nectarine, floral, earthy hops and a few muddled citrusy notes.
Pretty neat stuff. The apricot imparts some sweet, juicy flavours, but other than that the hops run rampant over the rest of the profile, with barely a peep from the grainy pale malt backbone. Notes of pink grapefruit and orange rind come through nicely, mixing nicely with hints of pine resin and flowers. Astringently bitter aftertaste of citrus pith and earthy resin, with the pepper finally showing its face soon afterwards. The habanero heat is subtle yet significant, sneaking up slowly on you after each sip, but not building up between. Medium-bodied, with good weight and light-ish carbonation levels that allow the chile pepper spiciness to shine through wonderfully. Very drinkable for something that is 7%, 70 IBUs, and includes habaneros as an ingredient.
Final Grade: 3.89, a B+. I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but it turns out that I'm apparently a big fan of Mexican Romance. The malt bill could stand to be beefed up a bit, and maybe the apricot too - but these are mere suggestions, because it's still quite delicious as-is. The heat level is such that only the pickiest of beer drinkers would be unable to tolerate it, and the vast majority of people interested in "chile beers" will probably find it just about on the mark. This is a genuinely interesting beer unlike anything else I have tried from Ontario, and is worth a try on that basis alone. Hopefully it'll be popular enough to become a rotating offering.
