750 mL bottle from the brewery; served barely chilled.
Pours a murky brownish-copper colour, mustering about an inch of loose, soapy, pale beige-coloured head. It fades fast, leaving behind no collar, lacing, cap, or any remnants whatsoever really. Looks like flat cola. Cocoa and toasted nuts are noticeable on the nose, with hints of toffee, burnt bread and brown sugar.
Not bad; sort of a hybrid between a brown ale and a porter, with chocolatey elements serving as the central pivot point. Brown sugar sweetness at the forefront, along with bready, nutty malt flavours and dark chocolate. Light touches of molasses and prune. It becomes roastier and takes on more of a bitter, cocoa powder/baker's chocolate bent in the latter half, finishing earthy with more cocoa pod bitterness. Light bodied and kind of thin and watery, with minimal carbonation levels. Feels smooth and soft in the mouth, and quite quaffable; it's listed at 6.5% but could easily be mistaken for something in the 5.5% range.
Final Grade: 3.47, a passable B-. Gloom Chocolate Brown Porter isn't a head turner, but it's still pretty tasty. It's visually unimpressive, kind of thin and one-dimensional, but that doesn't stop it from being something that you could buy a pitcher of and share with some of your more malt-minded friends. The flavour profile is its strongest point, which does make up somewhat for its flaws, but also suggests a lot of potential for improvement. Worth sampling.
