Looks like a stout...smells like a stout...but tastes a lot lighter and thinner. Mouthfeel is thin and easy-drinking. My senses keep telling me I’m drinking a stout. Still sweet but not Smokey

Bomber picked up at the brewery and served slightly chilled.

Pours an opaque black chestnut-brown colour, capped off with a full inch of frothy, light beige-coloured head that lasts for a few minutes before fading. A thin collar remains, along with minimal lacing; looks fine. Roasted grains on the nose; hints of coffee grounds and dark chocolate, giving the aroma a bit of a mocha vibe. Slightly nutty and a bit earthy/dirty.

The flavour doesn't deviate much from the smell - there's some light treacle sweetness, with roasted malts picking up the slack for most of the flavour profile. Notes of cocoa, diluted coffee and hazelnut lead into an earthy, leafy finish with a touch of ash. Light in body, with moderate carbonation levels that give this black lager a crisp, prickly mouthfeel. Refreshing, very sessionable, and quite full-flavoured for 4.5%.

Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. While I don't exactly have a wide breadth of experience with schwarzbiers, they are still one of my favourite German lager styles - and Shin Licker is a respectable one that I wouldn't hesitate to call Refined Fool's best lager to date. Fairly straightforward, as this style tends to be, but delightfully quaffable nonetheless - worth a look if you have the opportunity, particularly if you enjoy beers like Köstritzer or Hop City's 8th Sin.
