Bomber picked up at the brewery earlier this week and served well-chilled. Some brief background info: SCITS is not a disease, but rather the city's oldest (and only downtown) high school. It is due to be closed in the near future and there has been a fair bit of community backlash against this proposal, given that Sarnia's downtown is currently revitalizing nicely.

Pours a clear, pale golden-yellow hue, capped off by one finger of loose, soapy white-coloured head. It fizzles down to nothing over the next minute or two, leaving behind no remnants whatsoever. Falls a bit flat visually. The aroma is straightforward, and much more in line with expectations - I'm mostly just getting clean barley malts on the nose; grainy, crackery and a little bready. Subtle hints of grassy hay suggest the presence of continental noble hops.

Recognizably German in style; the taste is clean and follows the nose fairly closely. Grainy pale malts and doughy, bready sweetness comprise most of the flavour, with notes of grassy, floral hops rounding out the back end. Off-dry finish with an odd chalky, medicinal bitterness that I can't put my finger on. This aspect of the flavour really bugged me at first, but became less noticeable over time. Light-bodied, with assertive carbonation levels and prickly bubbles that continuously tickle the palate. Crisp and refreshing, like a Helles lager is supposed to be.

Final Grade: 3.63, a B. For a brewery that doesn't have a whole lot of experience brewing pale lagers, Refined Fool's Save SCITS is a pretty solid one. This stuff sold out like hotcakes - and while the name/theme helped extensively in that regard, the approachable, "everyman" nature of this pale lager was undoubtedly another factor in its popularity. Similar to their cream ale, but with a more pronounced hop character and crisper texture. I might be a stupid, spoiled Viking alumnus, but even I am capable of noticing that the last thing Sarnia needs is another big, empty, rotting hulk of a building near downtown. Cough, Holmes Foundry, old general hospital, Devine St. school, etc...
