750 mL bottle from the brewery; served slightly chilled. Described as a mead braggot brewed with cardamom, long pepper and grains of paradise. Kind of interested in finding out where they sourced the honey for this one.

This braggot is an opaque muddy brown colour; an aggressive pour produced only a thin layer of light beige-coloured bubbles that quickly faded. The surface is left bare, with no lacing generated. Cardamom dominates the aroma, with suggestions of ginger, nutmeg and peppery spice. Noticeably boozy, with additional notes of honey, caramel and Dutch apple pie. Kind of a chai tea thing going on.

Relatively sweet flavour profile, consisting at first of honey, pressed apple cider and brown sugar. Subtle hints of ginger and cinnamon give way to big notes of cardamom. Candied orange and weak pepper spice round out the tail end; sweet honey in the aftertaste. It's boozy and warming, but not as intense as you'd expect for 13%. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation levels that result in a smooth, wet mouthfeel that feels a bit flat. A good sipper, but the spice profile becomes tiresome after a while.

Final Grade: 3.40, a B-. Mid-Life Spices is Refined Fool's first braggot, and it is an admirable effort. Agreeable flavour - the high alcohol content doesn't run rampant, and while this beer is certainly quite sweet, it's not annoyingly-so and does possess some semblance of a reasonable balance. The cardamom is a little too prevalent and starts to tire the palate after a while, but if you split this bottle with someone else (like a normal human being would) then that probably won't be a big concern for you. I like this, but I'm not head over heels for it and I doubt I'll be purchasing another bottle given the steep price.
