650 mL bottle from the brewery; served at cellar temperature.
Pours a murky, muddy burgundy-brown colour, with one finger of foamy, light beige-coloured head that fizzles off rapidly. No lacing, no cap, no collar. Toasted biscuits on the nose; lots of treacle sweetness, raisin, fig and date with hints of cocoa and red grape. A tad boozy, but very nice aroma.
It's a bit on the strong side, but stylistically this is a decent doppelbock. Very malt-forward, with an array of flavours that range from dark bread crust, molasses and toasted biscuits, to dark-fruit notes of raisin, fig, date and prune that only add to the richness of the profile. Finishes with some earthy, herbal notes and cocoa bitterness, and noticeable alcohol warming into the sweet-ish aftertaste. Nearing full-bodied, with restrained carbonation levels that meekly nudge the palate; the mouthfeel is smooth but a little flat. Gives you the sticky lips. Not perfect by any means, but very hard to dislike.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. Another Pinecone Fight? might just be a Sarnia-residing malt-lovers' best friend. Rich hardly seems satisfactory to describe the taste of this extra-strong German-style dark lager, which is practically oozing with doppelbock-y goodness - and so what if that's not a real adjective? Though the limp mouthfeel and visuals hurt it somewhat, this is still a pretty solid beer that has the potential to become very good with only a few tweaks. Recommended.
