650 mL bottle from the brewery and served slightly chilled. I'm not 100% sure if this is supposed to be a Berliner Weisse, but after having a few sips (prior to adding it to the database), I can't see any other category that it would fit into better.
Opens with a brief but manageable gusher, then pours a cloudy, opaque mustard yellow colour. About an inch of foamy, fizzly white head erupts at the surface, but vanishes over the next minute with an audible snap-crackle-pop. Not getting any lace, but it does leave a sort of scummy, snotty film behind on the inside of the glass after it recedes. Definitely not a looker. The aroma is mild, with hints of grainy, gristy pale wheat malts, crackers and a decent amount of (what I am guessing is) lactic acidic sourness. Tart and weakly funky.
Not that good; very straightforward flavour profile, with restrained sourness. Grainy cereal malt sweetness, followed by tart, citric lemon and wild bug acidity, with kind of a papery cardboard flavour on the back end. Finishes off-dry. Light and thin in body, with moderately assertive carbonation levels and a prickly, crisp-leaning mouthfeel. Feels slick, and coats the palate with each sip. Not too challenging to drink.
Final Grade: 3.06, a C+. I'm definitely not a sour expert, but I'd like to think I can distinguish a good one from a mediocre one - and unfortunately, This Beer's Gone Bad falls squarely into the latter grouping. Not sure if they used Brett, Lacto, Pedio, or some combination thereof, but the end result is just lacking. I can't recall Refined Fool trying their hand at too many sours previously - there was a gose last year, but that's about it. I'd say more practice is in order, because this isn't something I'd be interested in purchasing again.
