650 mL bottle from the brewery, served slightly chilled. Reviewed on my phone.
Pours an inky, opaque brownish-black cola colour, topped with a half-inch cap of frothy, khaki-tinted head. It lasts for a few minutes, soon receding to a thin collar with minimal lace. The aroma includes dark chocolate and creme de menthe, with hints of brown sugar and vanilla. Reminds me of those mint chocolate Girl Scout cookies.
The flavour basically follows the aroma, and is about what you'd expect from something marketed as a "mint chocolate stout". Baking chocolate bittersweetness features prominently, as does the oily pungency of mint leaf. Hints of coffee, caramel and peppermint stick. Finishes with some earthy, roasty, herbal hop astringency that fails to really stand up to the two focal ingredients, which more or less dominate everything else. Medium in body, with light carbonation featuring tiny bubbles that gently prickle the tongue. Smooth and a little slick, leaving an oily coat behind on the palate after each sip. Average drinkability; the abv is well-integrated and this beer starts off charming... but I could see it getting tiresome if you tried to tackle more than one bottle.
Final Grade: 3.82, a solid B+. If you enjoy the ice cream flavour or the aforementioned cookies, then It's Flute Season will probably scratch your itch - but this one could certainly use a few tweaks to bring it to the next level. The mint is a bit much honestly, and the underlying base stout is just OK, largely lacking the sort of rich, complex, roasted malt flavours that strong stout fans crave. A bit two-dimensional. But that's enough criticism for this review - griping aside, I enjoyed it and would likely pick it up again.
