Tallboy from the LCBO; coded 20090L and served barely chilled.
Pours hazy golden-yellow, generating half an inch of frothy white head that dissipates in less than a minutes' time. A sickly thin collar is the only lingering remnant, with no cap or lacing in sight. Its aroma is muted, with hints of lemony yogurt acidity, passion fruit and pear.
Tastes pretty good - not particularly sour at all though. The passion fruit doesn't have much competition, but there're light suggestions of d'Anjou pear, banana and mango, as well a wheaty pale malt sweetness in the background. There's shades of lemony tartness towards the finish, but overall the sweet/tart fruit elements greatly outweigh the sourness. It's light-bodied in the mouth, but the texture is somewhat slick, with a heftier mouthfeel than I'd expect from a 4.7% summer refresher.
Final Grade: 3.61, a B grade. Canatara!, if taken simply as a locally brewed, summer seasonal, fruity sour, is perfectly fine for what it is. Taken strictly to style as a Berliner, I'd say its sourness is far too tempered, and it feels a little thicker than I'd prefer from a light beer. Altogether, it's still a decent fruit beer that I enjoyed, but I don't think I'd offer this up as an especially good example of a BW. I'll probably return to it again at some point, but I'd need to be in the mood for something fruity and a bit tart.
